Ocean Beach kitchens have a character you don’t find anywhere else in San Diego. A lot of OB homes are 1920s–1940s craftsman cottages and beach bungalows, small footprints, tight galley layouts, and original details worth keeping. Add the salt air rolling in off the Pacific and the coastal zone that covers much of the neighborhood, and a kitchen remodel here takes more planning than a tract home inland. We’ve been remodeling kitchens across San Diego County since 2014, and we know how to open up a cramped OB cottage kitchen without stripping the soul out of the house. Licensed, local, and used to the quirks of this beach town.

What an Ocean Beach Kitchen Remodel Includes

Every OB kitchen is different, but most projects we take on near Newport Avenue and up in the OB cottages cover the same core work. A full remodel usually means tearing the old kitchen down to the studs and rebuilding from there.

  • Design and layout: reworking cramped galley kitchens, removing a non-load-bearing wall to open to the living room, or reclaiming space from a back porch.
  • Cabinetry: custom or semi-custom shaker cabinets that match an older cottage, with smarter storage for a small footprint.
  • Countertops: quartz or natural stone, sealed to hold up in a coastal home.
  • Flooring, lighting, and electrical: bringing old knob-and-tube or under-powered circuits up to current code.
  • Plumbing and appliances: relocating sinks, adding a dishwasher many older OB homes never had, and venting hoods properly.

What Makes Ocean Beach Kitchens Different

Remodeling a kitchen in OB is not the same as remodeling one in a newer inland neighborhood, and pretending otherwise is how homeowners get burned.

  • Old, small cottage kitchens. Many OB homes from the 1920s–40s have tiny kitchens, original framing that isn’t square, and surprises behind the walls. We plan for the unexpected and keep you posted as we go.
  • Salt air. Living blocks from the ocean means corrosion. We spec materials and finishes that hold up, stainless and coated hardware, marine-grade where it counts, and proper sealing on stone and cabinetry.
  • Coastal-zone permits. A big chunk of Ocean Beach sits in the California Coastal Zone, which can add a coastal development permit on top of the standard building permit. We handle that process so it doesn’t stall your project.
  • Preserving OB character. The eclectic, beach-town feel is the whole point. We keep what makes your cottage yours, original trim, archways, hardwood, while modernizing the parts that matter.

What a Kitchen Remodel Costs in Ocean Beach

Kitchen costs in OB depend on the size of the space, whether you’re moving walls or plumbing, the materials you choose, and what we find once the old kitchen comes out. Here’s a realistic range for the neighborhood:

  • Mid-range remodel: roughly $28,000–$42,000: new cabinets, counters, flooring, fixtures, and paint in the existing footprint.
  • Full remodel: roughly $42,000–$70,000: down-to-the-studs rebuild, layout changes, new electrical and plumbing, custom cabinetry.
  • High-end remodel: $70,000 and up: structural changes, premium appliances and stone, and high-end finishes throughout.

Older OB cottages sometimes need code upgrades, wiring, plumbing, framing, that a newer home wouldn’t. We give you a clear, itemized estimate up front, no surprises baked in.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Ocean Beach?

Most Ocean Beach kitchen remodels run between $28,000 and $70,000. A mid-range refresh in the existing layout lands around $28,000–$42,000, while a full down-to-the-studs remodel with new wiring, plumbing, and custom cabinetry runs $42,000–$70,000. High-end projects with structural changes go above $70,000. Older OB cottages can need code upgrades that affect the total, so we always give an itemized estimate first.

How long does a kitchen remodel take in Ocean Beach?

A typical Ocean Beach kitchen remodel takes about 6 to 10 weeks of construction once we start. Permitting comes first and can add a few weeks, and coastal-zone homes may need extra time for a coastal development permit. Older OB cottages occasionally turn up surprises behind the walls that add a little time. We give you a realistic schedule before demo day.

Do I need a coastal permit to remodel my kitchen in Ocean Beach?

Possibly. Much of Ocean Beach sits inside the California Coastal Zone, and work there can require a coastal development permit in addition to the standard City of San Diego building permit. Most interior-only kitchen remodels are simpler, but it depends on your exact location and scope. We check the coastal zone status for your address and handle the full permit process for you.

Are you licensed to remodel kitchens in Ocean Beach?

Yes. We’re a licensed San Diego contractor, California license #1004363, and we’ve been remodeling kitchens across San Diego County since 2014. We pull all required permits through the City of San Diego, work with licensed subcontractors, and carry insurance.
